Monday Oct 18, 2021
Black bears are familiar residents of Montana's mountains and forests and have garnered a reputation for their surprise visits to UM’s campus.
But, drawn by the irresistible scent of human garbage, bears are frequenting Missoula at unusually high rates this fall, leading to increased headaches for Fish, Wildlife and Parks and an uptick in encounters with unsuspecting students.
Kaimin arts and culture reporter Haley Yarborough joins Kaimin Cast host Austin Amestoy to "bear" the good and bad news about our furry forest friends and the efforts underway to keep them -- and us -- safe.

UM professor reported for ‘disturbing,‘ ‘ethically bankrupt‘ blog
Monday Oct 11, 2021
Monday Oct 11, 2021
In August, four women filed a Title IX lawsuit against UM alleging sex discrimination. Weeks later, new allegations emerged that leaders at the School of Law discouraged students and professors from coming forward with their own Title IX complaints. The law school's deans have since resigned, and the university has stated it intends to launch an independent investigation into the complaints.
Now, the Montana Kaimin has learned that a computer science professor has been reported by his superiors for writing an online blog described by coworkers as "disturbing" and "ethically bankrupt."
This week, news reporter Andy Tallman speaks with Kaimin Cast host Austin Amestoy and breaks down the content of professor Rob Smith's blog and YouTube videos -- and the reaction from UM staff and students.

National Hispanic Heritage Month runs every year from Sept. 15 - Oct. 15, but for one University of Montana wildlife biology professor, celebrating heritage is a way of living, not a yearly event.
As a relatively new professor at UM, Dr. Erim Gómez is bringing a strong connection to his culture and his love for the outdoors into his classroom, hoping to encourage his students to do the same.
Kaimin Photo Editor Antonio Ibarra joins Kaimin Cast host Austin Amestoy with the story of how one Hispanic American professor is inspiring students to achieve success.

Views from gun country
Monday Sep 27, 2021
Monday Sep 27, 2021
Montana House Bill 102 was a flashpoint in the state Legislature this year, sparking fierce debate over the need for concealed and open carry on college campuses. The bill sailed through the Republican-dominated House and Senate on party lines, but was quickly challenged in court, where it remains today, locked in legal limbo. HB 102 seeks to allow Montanans to carry firearms nearly anywhere in the state, and while the partisan battle lines seem clear cut in Helena, the opinions of Montanans and politicians outside the Capitol are more complicated.
This week, Kaimin Arts and Culture Editor Clarise Larson talked to Montanans from the Capitol to the cornfield and shared the stories of two individuals and their divergent perspectives on life in gun country with Kaimin Cast host Austin Amestoy.

In July, the National Collegiate Athletic Association -- NCAA -- issued a groundbreaking change to its rules regarding how college athletes make money. For the first time ever, athletes would be able to profit off their name, image and likeness.
The new policy paved the way for athletes to begin building a brand for themselves through sponsorships, endorsements, merchandise and more. At the University of Montana, the NCAA rules change has opened new doors for Freddy Brown III, a guard on the UM men's basketball team.
Kaimin Sports Editor Jack Marshall sat down with Kaimin Cast host Austin Amestoy to share the story of a three-generation basketball dynasty, and how its youngest member is blazing new trails in the family business.

Sorority shutdown
Monday Sep 13, 2021
Monday Sep 13, 2021
University of Montana students eager to join a sorority during "rush," Greek life's biggest recruiting week, will find one less option available this year. UM's chapter of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority unceremoniously suspended operations at the end of the spring 2021 semester after more than 100 years on campus. Kappa alumni cite falling membership and financial instability as factors in the shutdown.
Kappa Kappa Gamma's closure comes amid stagnant enrollment numbers at the university and waning interest in Greek life, even as a previously defunct fraternity reopened its doors last year and swelled to more than 20 members.
Kaimin News Editor Mazana Boerboom sits down with Kaimin Cast host Austin Amestoy and shares the stories of several past and present sorority and fraternity members as they assess the state of Greek life at the University of Montana.

In the crosshairs: Who controls Montana‘s universities?
Monday Sep 06, 2021
Monday Sep 06, 2021
In a blockbuster session under a newly-united Republican government, the Montana Legislature passed a series of bills promising sweeping changes to life in the state. One of the first signed by Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte, House Bill 102 seeks to permit the carrying of firearms nearly anywhere in the state -- including on college campuses.
But the bill quickly faced lawsuits from state employees and the university system, who claimed the bill unconstitutionally limits the rights of the state's Board of Regents.
Kaimin News Editor Griffen Smith joins Kaimin Cast host Austin Amestoy to explain HB 102, its potential ramifications for Montana's public universities and how students are reacting.

Weeks before students were set to return to the classroom, four women filed a Title IX lawsuit against the University of Montana alleging President Seth Bodnar and other higher-ups fostered a "good ol' boys club," paying female staff less than their male counterparts and blocking career progress.
Now, more than a dozen other women are attempting to join the complaint and are seeking to approve it as a class-action lawsuit.
Montana Kaimin Features Editor Mariah Thomas sits down with Kaimin Cast host Austin Amestoy to break down the allegations and shed some light on where the suit may go from here.
